Contingency theories of leadership are definitely useful in today's businesses. In essence they have introduced the question of what is the best leadership style Prior to the contingency theories we mainly believed that leaders were born and that there was a "magic" formulas, a set of human characteristics that would render one individual a great leader. More importantly this belief was applicable in every situation.

Over the years (1950's / 1960's) researchers have theorized about what human traits should prevail based on situational conditions and the expected response.

From a business perspective, the contingency theories can help those with leadership responsibility understand that their Leadership Style needs to be adapted to the situational conditions.

More Specifically Fiedler's contingency theory can be use to help staff your organization. If you are looking to fill a leadership position where the organizational environment is not well structure, then you should ensure that one of your search criteria should included strong people skills.

Another important contengency theory to note is Vroom-Yetton-Jago decision-making model of leadership they have elaborated an amazing decision model where you answer a series of questions with regards to a particular questions and the model will suggest a leadership style that would provide you with the best response.
